Brief

To personally interrogate the text ‘The portrait in history’ extract and to interpret how we saw fit the story through typography and image. My objective was to bring light to core underlying themes from the extract and to enhance them visually through playing predominantly with textures.

Final Outcome and Reflection

The Portrait in History zine allowed me to develop my analytical skill as the key to this brief was understanding the text at hand. I believe that my in-depth research process, allowed me to open up new avenues for visual and typographic play.

I produced this zine at the beginning of my degree journey, with that being said there are certainly some typographical and layout problems with my document. Acknowledging this factor not only depicts my growth as a designer but furthers the consideration of users interacting with my work. For example, I would widen the external margins to allow for more space when holding the zine.

Acknowledging that elements aren’t perfect shows my new refined eye for design however when producing this zine at the time, it challenged me to play with new software and analogy processes. Through analysing the extract at hand and unpicking deeper interpretations, it allowed for my work to contextually have greater depth. Since then when working with text-based work I ensure I have a solid foundation of the context prior to initiating my design process. Playing with physical manipulation to produce this zine really allowed me to view graphic design outside of the digital software and start to explore the two processes of analogy and digital colliding. Little did I know at the time, but this project really did shape the way in which I approach my practice today.
